  • Simple words on paper can not describe my positive experience with Chippewa Valley Orthopedics. From the appointment staff, surgery schedulers, to providers all were very accommodating during an unplanned hip surgery while visiting "home" from rural Alaska. I was given direction and follow through until able to return north of the arctic circle - where specialized health care is unavailable. My confidence remains high for this practice and the expertise within. Thank-you.

I have done a lot of thinking about my recent visit with Dr. Berschback and come to decide that I had to share. Nothing in the way he handled my visit indicated that he had any clue in how to care for his patients. Im sure that he’s a fine surgeon and can evaluate medical information well enough, but when it comes to communicating with patients he seems clueless. Now, entering the office and getting checked in went very well. Everyone I dealt with during that time was kind, helpful, and curteous. However, after all that was done, I had to wait thirty minutes into my scheduled appointment time before Dr. Berschback finally came in. The moment he opened the door I could tell that he was in a hurry. I acknowledge that it was an afternoon appointment and that I was a new patient, but those are not excuses for poor patient care. Being in a hurry, I guess, he proceeded to ask me to tell him how I fell and injured my arm/hand. I did my best to describe my accident and how I landed when I fell, but he seemed not to care. This baffled me as I was used to the doctors I had initially been seen by being very curious about these details. I then proceeded to tell him about the pain in my wrist/hand becoming worse each day after the accident and feeling like something was moving or shifting that should not be. Again, to my surprise, he seemed not to care at all about this, including the fact that I was unable to sleep at night and having trouble focusing on work/class due to the pain. He then did a few tests on my arm and hand by poking and prodding it. He even poked where I said was the most painful twice and I can still feel it throbbing from that. After these quick tests, he told me what I already knew. That my x-rays from urgent care did not show a break and that he was going to get a scan scheduled for me. Then he told me to take ibuprofen for my pain and that he was going to get me a brace for the meantime. I was really taken aback at this point and so I just agreed and out of the room he went. It wasn’t until the nurse came into the room with the brace he had chosen for me that i really got upset. I had specifically told him about the pain in my hand being worse when my thumb moved, and he had chosen a brace without thumb support. Granted, I then told the nurse that I felt that i was not given proper medical care from the doctor. She listened to me and agreed to get a thumb immobilizing brace and bring the doctor back in. When he came back in finally, he seemed very confused as to why I felt the way I did. So I told him, in more specifics, that I felt he had disregarded any and everything that I had to say about how this injury was affecting me and only viewed me as a set of x-rays and a diagnosis. He then told me that he was not going to write me a prescription for narcotics, which just enraged me. I was simply trying to receive medical assistance and advice from him, as I have been taking the very maximum dosages of Ibuprofen and Acetaminophen for the past five days. I was trying to get help from a professional, and he essentially accused me of just seeking pills. I told him all of what I just wrote here in a bit of a frenzy of anger and, frankly, disgust. After that, he seemed to retreat from even attempting to understand my perspective and worries. He then became very defensive and suggest that I find a different clinic to work with, which I find extremely unprofessional and defeatist. At this point I realized that this man would not ever be able to empathize with me as a patient. I worry if he can empathize with any patient that doesn’t fit inside of his, seemingly limited, range of perspective. We closed our interaction shortly after he made an inside “joke” to the nurse, which also felt highly inappropriate to me. Regardless of the content, he should have at least been aware that this was not the right context. Thankfully, I was able to set up a scan and follow up with a different doctor here. In short, he really left me feeling depersonalized and ignored. Here’s hoping for better luck with the next one, I guess.
